Abstract

Mathematical simulation in ecology is a very powerful tool in testing the “long-term” effects of different hypothesis and/or parameter values. Several models simulate processes such as photosynthesis (Duncan et al., 1967; De Wit et al., 1970; Miller and Tieszen, 1972) or greater or smaller parts of an ecosystem as in population dynamic models (Taylor, 1967; Pielou, 1969; Brennan et al., 1970). Relatively few deal with whole ecosystems. The main reason being one of complexity and the necessity of data from all levels of the system, a fact which demands close and expensive teamwork between systems analysists and biologists from different fields. Examples of greater ecosystem models are those presented by Bledsoe et al. (1972), Swartzman and van Dyne (1972) and Wielgolaski et al. (1972).
