Abstract

The relationship between Helicobacter pylori gastritis and non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD; operationally defined as chronic or recurrent pain or discomfort centred in the upper abdomen in the absence of peptic ulceration) has remained in contention for many years. Recently, increasing data have accumulated that support the null hypothesis that there is no true relationship between H. pylori infection and NUD, although there remains healthy scepticism in the scientific community. In this chapter, the epidemiological and pathophysiological data linking gastritis and dyspepsia are reviewed, and the clinical trial evidence is then summarized.
