Abstract

Augmented Reality has undergone a renaissance on 3rd generation smart phones. Most of these systems heavily rely on the hardware sensory of the devices and thus are dependent on their accuracy. The paper will try to assess the quality of the sensor hardware of a 3rd generation smart phone (exemplary HTC G1/Dream) and the consequences for an Augmented Reality pedestrian navigation application (prototype). It will show that the accuracy which can be achieved by relying on sensor values is sufficient. However when testing the system prototype, it failed in certain (worst case) scenarios due to bad GPS reception or compass interference.
