Abstract

Basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin are the most common histologic types of skin cancer and the most common malignancies. They are significantly associated with ultraviolet light exposure, exposure to ionizing radiation, exposure to chemical carcinogens such as arsenic, chronic irritation, and gene mutations. Squamous cell carcinoma is also related to alterations in immune system. The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer in the United States in 2007 was more than 1 million cases with an annual mortality of less than 2000. Approximately 20% of the American population will develop basal cell carcinoma and/or squamous cell carcinoma during their lifetime.
