Diagnosis and Surgical Management of Renal Tumors

Abstract

In this chapter we address the contemporary issues surrounding the use of percutaneous renal mass biopsy. We review current opinions surrounding the appropriate indications for renal mass biopsy as dictated by both expert opinion and clinical consensus guidelines. We then delve into the technical aspects of percutaneous renal mass biopsy. The diagnostic accuracy and utility of percutaneous renal mass biopsy results are then explored by reviewing a number of large, contemporary series, and meta-analyses. We then review the potential complications associated with percutaneous renal mass biopsy and how to best minimize their occurrence. Lastly, we review the economic implications of percutaneous renal mass biopsy when utilized as part of the diagnosis and management of the small renal mass.
