Definition

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is an uncommon neoplasm, often with an indolent clinical course. The origin of this tumor was a subject of controversy for many years. Initially, these localized pleural tumors were considered to have a mesothelial origin, similar to the diffuse pleural mesothelioma; therefore, it was called “localized mesothelioma.” However, in more recent years, advances in electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry have demonstrated that SFTP arises from the submesothelial mesenchymal layer, differentiating them from pleural mesotheliomas. SFTP is not associated with asbestos exposure or with any other environmental agent, as opposed to pleural mesotheliomas.
