Abstract
Sympathetic ophthalmia (SO) is an uncommon bilateral disorder following severe trauma to an eye. Uveal tract antigens leave the cloistered inside world of the eye and cause an autoimmune-like response which ultimately affects the uninjured (sympathizing) eye 5 days to 60 years later. SO causes a bilateral panuveitis and must be suspected when there is a uveitis in the contralateral eye of a severely injured fellow eye. Prompt diagnosis and treatment is necessary to preserve vision. In this chapter, we will discuss some illustrative cases and review the latest information about this sight threatening disorder.
