Ichthyofauna of the Kara Sea – is composed of 54 species. Cod is common off the coast of Novaya Zemlya, especially in the Kara Gate; cisco, whitefish, smelt, trout, white salmon, and grayling are common in the fjord. However, there are no commercial concentrations of fish. Fishery is common in the local population to ensure their needs. The stocks of anadromous and semi-anadromous species along the coast of the Kara Sea are used by fishery of the lower reaches of the rivers flowing into the sea. According to the new data of PINRO (publication in the series “Russia’s contribution to IPY,” 2011) for the first time the population of Greenland halibut and Arctic cod potentially productive for fishing were discovered in the Kara Sea.
