Ice Jams – heaps of ice accumulating in the river bed during the ice drift. The I.J. cause the water level to rise sharply, sometimes up to several meters, which results in flooding. I.J. can cause destruction of the waterworks and shores. Particularly hefty I.J. are formed at the Northern Dvina and the Lena Rivers. To deal with the I. J. explosives and other means are usually used.
