History of the Kara Sea Research begins with the first studies in the Kara Sea in the form of occasional soundings made by V. Barents in 1544, when he went around Novaya Zemlya in the north on two ships. The Russian Pomors were searching for the sea routes to the east through the Kara Sea in the twelfth century. As early as in the sixteenth century Russian sailors sailed in the Kara Sea. Russians had trade relations with the population of the lower reaches of the Ob, Taz, and Yenisey and in they founded the commercial city of Mangazeya on the Taz River, which was at the same time the center of handicraft production. The first description of the southern shores of the Kara Sea was made by the members of the Great Northern Expedition (1733–1743). In 1734 it was decided to begin a survey of the Arctic coast from the Ugra Strait; the work in this sector was led by Lieutenants S. Muravyev and M. Pavlov.
