Hinlopenstretet – a strait separating Western Spitsbergen from Nordaustlandet (North East Land) Island. The strait is 166 km long and ca. 90 km wide at the southern entrance and 28 km wide at the northern entrance. H. gets as narrow as 9 km in the middle. The depths range within 55 and 450 m allowing the passage of ships with any draft. H. is frozen for the most part of the year. The ice begins to break up in June. While H. can be ice-free in July, it can become blocked with drifting ice in August and September.
