Taymyr Gulf – intrudes into the northwestern Kara seashores of Taymyr Peninsula. The length is ca 40 km, and the width is ca 80 km. T. gets narrower becoming Taymyr Bay. The depth is up to 16 m. T.G. is frozen for the most part of the year. The Lower Taymyra River flows into T.G. Eared seal and white whale that occur in T.G. Nordenskjold Archipelago are situated at the entrance to T.G.
The gulf was for the first time partially surveyed and approximately mapped as a nameless gulf in 1741 by Lieutenant Kh. P. Laptev. Later T.G. was explored by A. E. Nordenskjold’s Swedish polar expedition aboard Vega in 1878–1889 and F. Nansen’s Norwegian polar expedition aboard Fram in 1893–1896. The gulf was named after Taymyr Peninsula.
