    An island situated off the shore of Taymyr Peninsula in the Kara Sea. The length is ca 37 km, and the width is 18.5 km. The area is 350 km2. The altitudes are of up to 235 m (Negri Mountain). The mountains are predominantly composed by sandstone and slates overlapped by quaternary deposits. The island’s heavily indented shores feature a series of bays and capes. It has tundra vegetation. An approximated contour of T. was mapped by A. F. Middendorf, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1845 using the data provided by Kh. P. Laptev and S. I. Chelyuskin. The island was named after Taymyr Peninsula. T. was discovered by N. A. E. Nordenskjold’s expedition in 1878.
