Svyatoy Nos

• 1. A cape in the north of Kola Peninsula, an extremity of Svyatoy Nos Peninsula. S.N. extends by 15 km north-northwestward of the mainland delimiting Svyatonoskiy Bay from the east. The cape has a low relief. S.N. serves as a conditional northern border between the Barents Sea and the White Sea. The place name was given by pomors, Russian tradesmen, and hunters who referred to a cape as nos (“nose”). A lighthouse was installed at the cape. In 1915 12-year-old Mariya Bagretsova, a daughter of the lightkeeper, was awarded Silver Medal of St. George’s Order, the first military decoration to be received at the White Sea. During her father’s illness, she stood up for him as a lightkeeper as well as maintained the lighthouse in good working order.
