Abstract
In this chapter, a comparison of surface-, satellite-, model-, and reanalyses-based cloudiness climatologies is presented. The surface-based climatology shows most reliable results. The annual cycle of cloudiness in different parts of the Arctic is described and discussed. The spatial distribution of cloudiness (amount, number of clear and cloudy days) in months representing winter and summer conditions is analysed. Different kinds of fog occurring in the Arctic are described. Additionally, the spatial distribution of the number of days with fog is presented for the year, and for the summer season – when their frequency is the greatest.
