The Climate of the Arctic

Part of the book series: Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences Library ((ATSL,volume 52))

Abstract

In this chapter, a history of the development of views on atmospheric circulation in the Arctic is presented. A “permanent Arctic anticyclone” hypothesis existed in the scientific literature until about mid-twentieth century. Large-scale atmospheric circulation as one of the climatic processes is described in detail for all seasons. Yearly cycles of sea-level atmospheric pressure are also analysed. Synoptic-scale circulation is characterized using cyclone and anticyclone frequencies and speed in winter and summer. Average wind conditions in the Arctic for 4 months, by season, are described. Analysis of dynamic conditions is supplemented with local winds characteristics, mainly bora and foehns. At the end of the chapter, the main features of polar lows in the Arctic are summarised.
