Abstract
Abdominoperineal resection (APR) is a procedure that removes the lower part of the colon, the rectum and the anus. The most common indication for an APR is a malignancy of the rectum or the anus. Other tumors such as pelvic sarcomas, gynecologic or genitourinary malignancies may require APR as a part of their treatment. Advanced inflammatory bowel disease may be another indication. This chapter will focus on the technical details of curative intent surgical resection of patients with rectal malignancies. The techniques described herein can be adapted for benign indications.
