Self-Management of Young People with Chronic Conditions

Abstract

This chapter introduces the core concepts of this volume, entitled Self-Management of Young People with Chronic Conditions. A Strength-Based Approach for Empowerment and Support. We critically discuss definitions related to self-management and empowerment of young people with chronic conditions, such as: chronic disease, healthcare transition, self-management (support), empowerment, autonomy, and agency. Furthermore, the core principles that guide this book are introduced: we advocate a positive youth development approach, focusing on empowerment and growth rather than problems or issues; and employ a broad definition of self-management, which means that it goes beyond medical management and focuses on young people achieving their full potential and a good quality of life. This chapter ends with a brief overview of the contents of the chapters included in this book.
