Abstract

The geological research history of the Tjörnes sequence is quite long with reconnaissance accounts dating back to the mid-eighteenth century. The earliest studies dealt mainly with the rich fossil material. While the paleontologial research has continued up to the present, studies combining stratigraphical, paleontological, and sedimentological aspects of the sequence became more numerous in the twentieth century. During the last two decades of the twentieth century the main emphasis was on paleomagnetic stratigraphy, K/Ar dating, and lithostratigraphy of the upper part of the Tjörnes sequence, where lithological evidence and changes in mollusc assemblages indicate the onset of recurrent glaciations. Research interest has continued into the twenty-first century as shown by publications on stable isotopes, micropaleontology, as well as paleomagnetic work and radiometric dating. The Tjörnes sequence spans Miocene, Pliocene, and Quaternary lava flows and fossiliferous sedimentary rocks. The thickness of the sediments is unusual for Iceland which consists mainly of volcanic rocks. The Tjörnes sequence is unique in the North Atlantic area in its lithological character and long Pliocene and Quaternary record, combining lithological and paleontologial evidence about past environmental conditions, temperatures, and climate.
