Abstract
Pathologists are core members of the colorectal cancer MDT. Traditional histopathological diagnosis, typing and staging of colorectal tumours is still key to planning the best patient management although molecular testing is beginning to add useful information in particular treatment scenarios. Pathological examination of the surgical specimen also provides a means of monitoring surgical technique and is the gold standard for audit of the quality of preoperative imaging. The pace of change in methods of diagnosis and in surgical and medical treatments of large bowel cancer, as well as huge advances in understanding the genetic basis of carcinogenesis and tumour progression, requires pathologists to interact closely with their clinical and scientific colleagues. The MDT meeting is an opportunity for pathologists to ensure that their reports remain “fit for purpose” in this rapidly changing world.
