Abstract

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving intervention in refractory respiratory and circulatory failure. ECMO may be utilised as a bridge to recovery in many patient groups. It is a well-established therapy used in the critical care environment globally. There have been increasing reports of its utility in the care of liver transplant patients. It has been used successfully in both adult and paediatric liver transplant practice. This chapter discusses the evidence base surrounding ECMO and it’s utility during the perioperative period of liver transplantation.
