Abstract
This Chapter presents three sections focusing on the sources informing the AVNews Corpus, with the aim of explaining the reasons that drove the choice of these news outlets and to present these sources in order to frame them in their respective socio-cultural contexts, in the corpus structure and in terms of the relationship each source, as sub-corpus, entertains with the other. In the first section, I will consider RAI and the BBC as main representatives of these two national contexts, providing a brief overview on these broadcasters’ history, their aims and corporate structures. In these contexts, news is presented under a monolingual mainstream perspective within each country’s national borders. In the second section, I will focus on a pan-European broadcaster, i.e. Euronews, as representative of the supranational context of diffusion of the news. Finally, a third section of this chapter will report about translational practices in each of these networks, by using first-hand sources of information and/or by reviewing the existing ethnographic work about them or a mix of the two.

From 2016 Rainews24 has a new chief editor, A. Di Bella, who made substantial changes both to the channel layout and contents, adding an interesting online-based news service in English, “Rainews Weekly”. However, the audio-visual texts of this study were recorded in 2015, for this reason the Di Bella’s administration and what that entails for the channel will not be discussed here.

To date, the BBC is still part of the EBU (https://www.ebu.ch/about/members), however, there are ongoing discussions over the future of this partnership after Brexit deal (or no deal) will be finalised.
