Abstract

Provision of anesthesia services outside the setting of the operating room, also known as non-operating room anesthesia (NORA), is growing due to increased demand for less invasive cardiac interventions. Recent advances in technology allows for increasingly complex cases, which may not otherwise be eligible for conventional surgery. Together with concomitant increases in co-morbidity burden and an aging population, the challenge of providing safe NORA is also rising. NORA anesthetic interventions for non-operative cardiac interventions may include monitored care, sedation, regional anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. Since anaesthesia for transcatheter procedures and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) have been covered elsewhere in this book, this chapter focuses on NORA for electrophysiologic procedures for cardioversion and cardiac ablation.
