Abstract
Due to anatomical and biomechanical features, the tibia presents a unique challenge to the practicing surgeon. Indications for surgical treatment for the tibia and ankle in OI are similar to other long bones. However, the tibia presents unique challenges with an increased rate of delayed union and non-union. Deformities of the bone include angular, rotational, and a flattening or “saber-shaped” deformity, all of which make surgical management unique. In addition, soft tissue contracture presents a barrier to achieving appropriate bony alignment. Step-by-step details of evaluation and surgical management of tibial deformity are discussed.
