Abstract

The decades of the new millennium have seen major international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations launching global initiatives that are ushering in a new era of disability awareness, seeking to address barriers and realize the rights of people with disabilities. It is very important therefore that health and development personnel understand their place within the disability domain. This chapter is designed to give readers a broad introduction to current global perspectives related to disability. It provides a baseline for surgical care providers to appropriately understand the newer concepts of disability, the correct terminology to use, and how to engage children and their families who have disabilities. It also introduces overview concepts regarding the place of rehabilitation for surgical conditions in children.
