Abstract
This chapter reviews the historical contexts of social work education, emphasising actual state of art and its challenges. It describes the first stages of introducing social work education in Romania, soon after the First World War, and continues with the description of the effects of the communist ideology on social problems and their management during the period between 1945 and 1990. Based on both literature review and the author’s own experiences, the article parallels social problems, social policies, and the expectations attached to the social work profession in the last three decades. The main part of the chapter deals with the evolution of social work education, after the dismantling of the communist regime in 1990, and its present and future role in the rebuilding and professionalisation of the social workforce.
