Imaging of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury in the Neurointensive Care Unit

Management of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract

In severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), imaging is mandatory for visualizing the degree of injury as well as the nature and location of the lesions in the acute phase and in later phases as well (Duhaime et al., Arch Phys Med Rehabil 91(11):1661–1666, 2010). Imaging is important in triaging patients for acute intervention, for follow-up, and for evaluation of the long-term outcome. This chapter suggests how to prioritize and interpret neuroimaging in TBI.
