Abstract
The current education system in the Northwest Territories emerges from a long history of tensions related to the processes of settlement and colonialism. Science education has been caught up in these tension-filled processes. Since the late 1960s, as power devolved from the federal government in Ottawa to the territorial government, the education system has shifted to more accurately reflect the peoples, languages, and land of northern Canada. This shift has included a focus on the development of northern teachers and northern curricula across all subject areas including science.
