Abstract
The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata,is a primary pest problem due to the damage caused by females to a large number of fruits, requiring a permanent control all around the world. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) has been successfully employed to eradicate new introductions of the Medfly in USA and extensive areas in Mexico and Guatemala (Hendrichs et al., 1983). The use of genetic sexing systems to separate males and females reduces the cost of mass production of flies and allows to sterilize only males and release them to the field (Busch-Petersen, in press).
