Abstract

Extraskeletal calcification is a common complication of chronic renal failure. With the advent of chronic hemodialysis this complication has been seen with increasing frequency and it is now apparent that it is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in this patient population (1–3). Studies in our laboratory have been directed at characterizing the crystalline features and inorganic constituents of these deposits, defining their pathogenesis and determining the clinical consequences of extraskeletal calcification.
