Abstract

Modern concepts of the biology of pituitary adenomas are dramatically different from those that were held from the time of Harvey Cushing1 until only a few years ago. Application of techniques such as electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and tissue culture to the study of pituitary adenomas, coupled with advances in the evaluation of the endocrinological state of patients with these tumors, has yielded information that required this revision of concepts. Because the traditional concepts dominated our thinking for so long, it is useful to review them.
