Abstract

Use of chemotherapy with radiation therapy, rather than giving the two in sequence, has undergone a resurgence of interest over the last 5 years. 1988 witnessed an approximately equal distribution of publications on combining chemotherapy with radiation and on induction chemotherapy reports in contrast to publications over the previous decade in which reports on induction chemotherapy regimens markedly predominated [1]. This new interest has resulted from several controlled, randomized studies over the years that have demonstrated an advantage to combining chemotherapy with radiation, as well as to the failure of similar controlled studies to find any survival advantage to various induction chemotherapy programs. Reluctance to fully endorse the use of combined chemotherapy and radiation remains widespread, however, due primarily to concern over toxicity.
