Rheumatic Diseases and the Heart

Abstract

These two conditions are now seen as being different manifestations of the same disease process. The difference between them is mainly one of degree (Hamrin 1972). Giant cell arteritis is the more severe, presenting with arteritis which is usually clinically obvious, while polymyalgia is essentially a symptom complex in which evidence of arteritis is found in a minority. The difference between them is somewhat artificial, as the two conditions may overlap. Their cause is unknown but the basis for each appears to be an arteritis of an autoimmune nature developing in older adults.
