Arthroscopic Anterior Capsulolabral Shoulder Stabilization Using the Suture Anchor Technique

  • Chapter
Shoulder Arthroscopy

Abstract

Multiple techniques have been proposed for arthroscopic repair of the unstable shoulder, including the use of staples, transglenoid passage of sutures, biodegradable tacks, and suture anchors.1–8 Reports on the use of staples to reattach the labrum have had poor results, with high recurrence rates, an average loss of 9° of external rotation,2 staple loosening, migration, and impingement on the articular surface.9,10 Transglenoid techniques have lower reported redislocation rates but are technically difficult and pose a risk of damaging the suprascapular nerve.11 The use of biodegradable tacks in arthroscopic instability repair is becoming more common; however, a reabsorption synovitis rate of 6% has been reported.12 Additional disadvantages caused by single-point fixation include difficulty with poor-quality ligamentous tissue, and ineffectiveness in tightening capsular redundancy.13
