The fate of the patients surviving acute pancreatitis

With special reference to chronicity of acute pancreatitis

Summary

In order to clarify the fate of patients who had survived acute pancreatitis, follow-up studies were performed. The results were as follows: (1) the cases progressed from acute pancreatitis to chronic one were considered to be 37 (18%) out of 206 cases, if chronic pancreatitis is diagnosed on the basis of frequent seizures of abdominal pain (2) of the 50 patients who studied various examinations, 13 (26%) were considered to be chronic pancreatitis if the criteria for diagnoses were based on the seizures of pain and on the disturbance of the pancreatic endocrine and exocrine functions (3) the patients who showed final clinical picture, such as pancreatic lithiasis, severe diabetes mellitus, and steatorrhea were observed in four (7%) out of 62 cass (4) those who could be diagnosed as chronic pancreatitis on the basis of overall test amounted to 11 (18%) out of all the 62 cases who underwent our examinations.
