Experience with aortic root replacement: Early and late results

Abstract

From January 1977 to August, 1991, 26 patients underwent aortic root replacement for various pathologies. Eighteen were established Marfans and six presented with acute aortic dissection. All had composite graft aortic replacements to replace the aortic valve and ascending aorta. Two young adults presented with hypoplastic aortic root and had homograft root replacement. There was no surgical death. One patient died seven years after operation due to excesive anticoagulation. The remaining patients are alright at the end of 14 year follow-up. We discuss their presentation, surgical technique of root replacement, postoperative management and factors affecting their survival.
