Acute Epstein-Barr virus infections in children

Summary

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-IgM antibodies could be detected in the sera of 36 children, most of whom had symptoms of Infectious Mononucleosis (IM). The detection of these antibodies indicates recent EBV infection. Heterophile antibodies could not be demonstrated in 17 of the 36 children. In young children, < 3 years, no heterophile antibodies could be detected at all. In two babies with EBV-IgM-antibodies bronchopneumonia and in a third baby a severe hepatosplenomegaly was diagnosed. In the serum of an 11-year-old boy with a Burkitt Lymphoma, EBV-IgM antibodies were present.
