Methods of investigation in the diagnosis and management of thyroid carcinoma

Abstract

Preoperative investigation of thyroid nodules is discussed with emphasis on the use of radionuclide scanning, ultrasound examination, and x-ray fluorescence to decrease the need for unnecessary surgical excision. A follow-up program is described involving the use of 131 I imaging techniques and serial thyroglobulin measurements in patients postoperatively for evaluation of response to treatment and detection of recurrence.
