Cancer of the male breast

Abstract

Thirty-nine cases of male breast cancer were reported to the Swedish Cancer Registry in 1962–1963, and sufficient information was gained from 34 of them for inclusion in this study. Male breast cancer constitutes 0.7% of the total number of breast cancers. The average age at time of diagnosis was 65 years. Many of the patients had complicating diseases. The patient's delay in seeking medical attention was an average of 7.9 months. Fifty-nine percent of the tumors were situated in the left breast. Four patients (12%) had gynecomastia. Fifteen percent of the cancers were clinical stage I, 38% stage II, 35% stage III, and 12% stage IV at the time of diagnosis. Twenty-one percent had histologically proven nodal metastases. Twenty-seven patients underwent a more or less radical operation. Most patients received radiotherapy after operative treatment. The overall corrected 5-year survival is 54% and 10-year survival 37%. A review of the literature is given.

Résumé

39 cas de cancer du sein chez l'homme ont été consignés en 1962–1963 dans le Registre Suédois du cancer. 34 observations sur 39, suffisamment complètes ont servi de base à cette étude.

Le cancer du sein de l'homme représente 0,7% du total des cancers du sein. L'âge moyen où il fut reconnu se situe à 65 ans. Le diagnostic fut porté en moyenne 7.9 mois après le début apparent de l'affection. 59% des tumeurs se situaient au niveau dsein gauche, 4 malades (12%) étaient attents de gynécomastie. En fonction du stade de la lésion la répartition était la suivante: stade I:15%, stade II:38%, stade III:35%, stade IV: 12%. 21% des sujets présentaient un envahissement ganglionnaire au moment du diagnostic. 21 malades subirent une opération d'exérèse d'étendue variable. Les opérés en majorité furent irradiés. Au total la survie a 5 ans a été de 54% et à 10 ans de 37%.

Abstracto

Treinta y nueve casos de cáncer mamario en el hombre fueron informados al Registro Sueco de Cáncer en 1962–63 y se obtuvo suficiente información en 34 de ellos para su inclusión en este estudio. El cáncer mamario masculino constituye un 0.7% del total de cánceres mamarios. La edad promedio en el momento del diagnóstico fue de 65 años. Muchos de los pacientes presentaban enfermedades asociadas que complicaban el cuadro. La demora por parte del paciente en buscar atención médica fue, en promedio, de 7.9 meses. El 59% de los tumores estuvo ubicado en la glándula mamaria izquierda. Cuatro pacientes (12%) presentaban ginecomastia. En el momento del diagnóstico el 15% de los cánceres estaban en estado clínico I, el 38% en estado II, el 35% en estado III y el 12% en estado IV. El 21% tuvo metástasis ganglionares histológicamente comprobadas. Veintisiete pacientes fueron sometidos a una operación más o menos radical. La mayoría recibió radioterapia después del tratamiento operatorio. La supervivencia global corregida a cinco años es de 54% y a 10 años es de 37%. Se hace una revisión de la literatura.
