Recurrent inguinal hernia in infancy and childhood

Abstract

Thirteen recurrent inguinal hernias in 11 patients were encountered over a 16-year period during which over 1,600 inguinal hernias were treated. Five recurrences were indirect, 7 direct, and 1 had indirect and direct components, a hernia en pantaloon. Recurrences occurred from 3 weeks to 4 years after the first operation. Indirect recurrence may be due to a technical error at the original operation or to infection. A direct recurrence after indirect inguinal herniotomy might be a persistence of a direct hernia missed at the original operation, or a new hernia. When operating for indirect inguinal hernia, it is essential to consider and search for a direct weakness if the indirect sac is too small to account for the clinical features.
