Breathlessness

Abstract

The term breathlessness has no precise definition, but most patients might describe it as being more short of breath than they should be in the circumstances. It is not clear to what extent the breathlessness of exertion in normal healthy subjects differs from that of organic disease, but in some cases of pathological dyspnoea there does seem a qualitative difference, for patients do describe a number of other sensations including feelings of drowning, suffocation, tightness in the chest, etc.
