Abstract
The contents of this book demonstrate clearly the complexities of the problems presented by child abuse even to the reader who lacks practical experience. If consideration be limited to the action required when babies and children are physically battered, what remains involves a wide range of human activities. The attempt even to outline plans for general management of battered children demands of the planner not only vaulting ambition, but also unreal optimism. The injuries represent a final common path for so many and such different circumstances. Yet action is required, even urgent action and in the light of experience already gained, theoretical objectives can be described and possible methods for attaining these objectives. How far the practical application of these methods is likely to attain objectives in real life can then be discussed.
