Abstract

Although a comparably young area of mass spectrometry, Fourier transform mass spectrometry is developing into an important analytical tool capable of ion storage, manipulation and remarkable resolution and sensitivity. Unfortunately, these attributes have been particularly challenging to demonstrate in the determination of large biomolecules. This chapter is presented to highlight the features, capabilities, methods of sample introduction and ionization, as well as applications in the area of biochemistry. Included is a fundamental discussion of operational theory and the areas of instrument development that must be pursued to establish a role for Fourier transform mass spectrometry in the analysis of biomolecules.
