Abstract

Melanoma constitutes 1–3% of all malignancies, with approximately 1/3 of these in the head and neck. Melanoma manifests itself in a variety of ways. It may occur in a preexisting nevus with recent changes. Much more commonly, it develops de novo as a new pigmented lesion or, rarely, as an amelanotic lesion. Metastatic lesions from a known or unknown primary, at times, affect most or almost all structures in the head and neck. Pigmented mucosal lesions or polyps should always be suspect.
