Abstract
Studies have recently shown that for a hospital-based gastroenterologist, the largest single disease state now seen is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Thus, the problem of IBD is a very significant one, particularly so for those who are primarily concerned with digestive disease. Furthermore, in an attempt to define what services internists and subspecialists provide, various terminologies have been developed for statistical and data collecting purposes. The terms primary care, secondary care, tertiary care, and principal care have been defined by medical planners. Principal care includes the patient with a chronic disease for whom the patient’s major care is handled by a specialist, either an internist or subspecialist. In terms of principal care patients, IBD ranks at the top of the list for gastroenterologists.
