Abstract

The early clinical symptoms of optic nerve tumours are visual field defects (sometimes of irregular shape) and diminished visual acuity. The disc may appear normal but in other cases papilledema, sometimes in combination with atrophy, optico-ciliary shunt vessels and choroidal folds may be found. Usually, the diagnosis of neuritis or vascular obstruction is made at this stage. With or without corresponding treatment, the visual acuity may improve during the following weeks and months before it drops again permanently.
