Abstract

Inflammatory myopathies are those in which muscle cell injury is largely attributable to an inflammatory reaction and inflammatory cells are invariably present in the muscle. The inflammatory response may be elicited by viral, bacterial or parasitic infestation of muscle. Bacterial and parasitic myositis prevail in the tropics, but are relatively infrequent causes in Western Europe. A systemic viral infection, such as influenza, is not uncommonly associated with or followed by an acute self-limiting myositis. However, the commonest clinically important inflammatory myopathies, responsible for debilitating and chronic disease, are the idiopathic disorders polymyositis and dermatomyositis.
