Abstract

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has a history almost as long as that of Canada. Canada was established on July 1, 1867, and the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) was established by a Government Order-in-Council on August 30, 1873. Some six months later, the first Force recruiting poster was distributed with a statement of the following qualifications:

“Candidates must be active, able-bodied men of thorough sound constitution and exemplary character. They should be able to ride well, and to read and write either the English or French language”.
