Abstract

The role of surgical therapy as an adjunct in the treatment of patients with Ewing’s sarcoma of bone is becoming increasingly clear. Since Ewing’s original description of the use of a radium pack in treating a patient with Ewing’s sarcoma of the ulna, surgery has been reserved primarily for the management of bulky and destructive lesions or for amputation following local failures of radiation therapy. It was well recognized that radiation therapy could most often control the primary tumor; however, the majority of patients developed systemic disease and died within two years.
