Abstract

The fundamental importance to the body of the immune system is evident in the following quintessential summary of its primary function — the recognition and protection of self self and the recognition and eradication of non-self Pregnancy, in which the mother is by definition carrying a partially ’foreign’ fetus, must, therefore, involve an accommodation of her immune system to this extraordinary phenomenon. This has been discussed in previous chapters.
